So we've issued a call to our most trusted film making associates to find the right individual for the job.

"What job?" You ask.

The job of going to Havana Cuba for 5 days and 4 nights to shoot video of our beloved Caribbean island from coast to coast.

It's a tough job, we know, but somebody's got to do it, and they've got to do it soon, before Raul Castro gets some crazy ideas about restoring Havana, or some new American president goes lifting the trade embargo, flooding Havana with investment capital.

Day of Remembrance at the Lasky-Demille Barn

So a day of remembrance was held at the Lasky-Demille Barn on Saturday, March 13th. Ric's student from the Kubert school, Larry Loc, said some kind words to help those present get a flavor of what his experience of Ric was as student so many years ago. Present were many animation industry professionals from every major studio. The picture below is of Ric's long time friend and coworker, Art Leonardi. You may know him as the father of the Pink Panther. Art has kindly agreed to be one of our next interviews. (If you're having a hard time seeing Art's face properly, simply turn your head sideways. Who knows, after you're done looking at the photo, you might find that the world looks better this way :)

Our visit to the San Diego Comic-Con was a resounding success! Interest has definitely waxed stronger due to our booth there! We have Larry Loc to thank, to a large extent, for our continued momentum during these lean months! Larry you're a scholar and a gentleman. It's taken a little while to post here, but it will be well worth the wait; we interviewed Mark Evanier, as well as 4 other former students and co-workers of Ric's, challenged Wesley Snipes to a push-up contest (his Ex-Marine bodyguard told us 'No, thanks'), and rubbed elbows with the current stars of Comic-Bookdom at the Eisner awards! It was an awesome event, with a most impressive turnout, and a classy venue, as usual. Look for video from our adventure to appear VERY SOON!

When Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane and the other trend-setters of modern comics are blessing a project like this, there's no use trying to fight it. It will blow the doors off the current print industry.

My bet; movie rights are sold within 3 months. Script developed in 6-8 months. Production completed within 18-24 months... any takers...? Didn't think so. Tyrese is a genius.

Oh, when you're at the San Diego Comic Con, don't forget to save a few bucks (after you buy a copy of Mayhem) for a limited edition Ric Estrada Movie T-Shirt and Poster at booth FF-14 in Artist Alley! Ric's son, Marc, (who cut short a career in fine art to go 'slumming it' with Phil Tippett Studios ;) carefully created a layout that uses an unreleased, never-before-seen war image of Ric's from 1951!!! Visceral graphic quality. The transcendence of the warrior's path. Believe me, you will be quite sad to miss the collector's opportunity of a lifetime - Owning a limited edition reprint of Ric's unreleased pre-Silver Age artwork! Can you smell the Pen and Ink...? I can. I have only a few of them, and they're waiting for you, but not for long.

Stinking Muay Thai!

I twisted my ankle big time. Doing what? Messing around with my buddy, learning Muay Thai, or "Nine Weapons"... So my foot is sitting in a big mixing bowl filled with ice, and a little water to really help get that chill deep down into the tendons. Thank goodness I'll be sitting down most of the time at ComiCon, otherwise this would be a serious problem. (Yes, it's that bad!) I've included a picture of the results of my shin conditioning to help prove the point: the Martial Arts are risky. Live by the sword, die by the sword... sometimes it's your own sword. Just ask Kurosawa :)

In case you're wondering what any of this has to do with the Ric Estrada Movie, here it is: I can no longer go to ComiCon as Richard Dragon, because I know I'm not hardcore enough :( So look for me to appear as someone else from Ric's rich comics career.

My Dad was an avid reader. He read all sorts of books, and especially knew the masterworks of our time. After all, he was introduced to the United States by none other than the great Ernest Hemingway himself. One of Ric's favorite books, however, was the Book of Mormon. He read it a lot, and he owned several copies throughout his adult life, especially in his later years. He gave me an old copy that he had written notes in, and I found a note today that reminded me of his ability to tackle the mundane with a certain easygoing happy-go-luckiness. A sort of 'Tao of Mormon', if you will.

A little background: earlier in this passage, the author says that he wishes he were an angel so he could preach to everyone in the world all at once, in essence do everything he ever wanted to do right at that moment. But he soon after says that he knows that this desire would go against God's plan for him; life is hard work, and it requires careful planning to do anything worthwhile, right? Enter the verse you see above, and Ric's careful note.

Ric taught me that we need to be patient with ourselves, and allow time for a learning curve. I love you, Ric. Happy Father's Day!

Growing my hair back

Ok, so this whole shaved-head thing has been, for me, a way to show the world how much I miss my Dad. Of course no one seems to get it, since very few people ask,"Hey Seth, why did you shave your head?" and my peers have started calling me 'Mr. Clean' and 'Gandhi'. So it's time to let this particular symbol of mourning go. See you at ComiCon with hair on my head. It'll be short, but it'll be there.

First Donation to the ComiCon Booth fund!

Thanks to Michael Paulson of Las Vegas, NV, the ball is rolling! There's a long way to go before we have sufficient funds to purchase the booth space, and this year's show is packed to the gills! Please donate as much as you are reasonably able to; a large part of our early funding effort will be bolstered by the sale of merchandise at the show, and we simply cannot move forward without a space to set up shop at the ComiCon.

On that note, if you will be exhibiting at San Diego ComiCon and would be so kind as to allow us to use a small corner of your booth, we can work out a deal that will be mutually beneficial.

So we are accepting donations again! Why? Well, there are a lot of reasons, but we'll cut to the chase: we need money for the short term goals of the project. Period. Grants and other investment money should be forthcoming, we believe, after ComiCon. But we need to actually get to ComiCon first! Check out the home page for our re-tooled 'DONATE' button! It will bring you directly to PayPal, where donations can be made in any sum, using any PayPal-approved form of payment. A record will be kept in order to give credit where it's due, both to Uncle Sam at tax-time, and to our audience in the final cut. Ric Estrada final health update

Ric Estrada passed away peacefully this morning between 6-7 am Mountain Daylight Time. He was surrounded by his wife and children, and was at peace with his mortality.

We had a family devotional around his body as we waited for the hospice care personnel to arrive. Mom read his last wishes to us, and we made rough plans for a funeral service. Details will be posted as soon as plans are finalized.

Please pray for his wife, Loretta, as she copes with the immense change in her life. Thank you for your kindness and support.

Farewell to my father

Update on Ric:
He stopped eating solid foods exactly one week ago. He stopped drinking fluids yesterday. He hasn't been speaking in coherent sentences for days. So I'm on Delta airlines flight 1172 with my wife, flying to Utah to see my dad one last time before he passes on.

As a side note (to explain the picture), I shaved my head in mourning for the man; he's given me so much, and inspired the best in me. Yes, I've inherited some of his quirks, but most of my annoying habits don't actually come from Ric. Having my head shaved reminds me of him. All I have to do is touch my now-bald head, and it's like I'm touching his. It must seem like kind of a childish thing to do, I'm sure, but I can't help it, I'm Ric's child.

RIC'S HEALTH STATUS:

from an email by Loretta, Ric's wife - "Ric had a CT scan two days ago which showed that the tumors in his liver have increased in size - one from 5cm to 7cm and the other from 3cm to 5cm. We saw Ric's oncologist Dr. Bott today; he said he could offer Ric two options. Option 1, Stop treatment, call in hospice and plan for the inevitable. Option 2, Try another chemo regime for 3 months to see if it will push the cancer back into remission. If it works Dr. Bott said it could keep the cancer in remission for maybe another year. Ric chose option 2."
